redfish

Inshore fishing on the Space Coast is heating up! The bite for bull reds and big black drum bite couldn’t be better!

This past week we experienced a large full moon. These full moons typically group these larger drum and redfish up to spawn. Look for both species in deeper areas such as bridges, shoals, spoil islands and deeper edges. On the warmer sunny days these fish can be found by the hundreds on flats adjacent to these deeper areas. One thing I particularly like about fishing these large groups is catching them on light tackle with artificial.

With the cooler water temps this is the one time of the year you can tone your tackle down and play the fish a little longer without doing any harm; however, I wouldn’t go less than a 4000 size reel and 15lb braid, gulp and other similar scented soft plastics work wonders on these schools. Cast your bait way beyond these fish and slowly retrieve your bait a few feet ahead of them for best results. If artificial baits aren’t your thing, a well placed large shrimp or half a blue crab is a sure bet!

We should see more drum fishing and even some big sea trout showing soon as spring arrives, and already have seen some tarpon showing in few areas. Looking forward to an awesome spring and summer!
