black drum

The weather and fishing couldn’t be much better right now along the lagoons and near-coastal waters here on Florida’s Space Coast. Captain Justin and I have been crushing our customers’ arms on giant black drum on our recent trips. Most of these fish are running 30 to 50 pounds. We employ a very simple rig consisting of a 1/8 or 1/4 ounce Saltwater Assassin Boodah style jig head with a 3/0 hook in it. This head is light enough to let the shrimp slowly fall into the drums strike zone, but has a hook strong enough to land them. 30 pound test Sufix fluorocarbon leaders are a must because other fish in the school will run into you line and break you off if you go any lighter. We have been using the new Penn Battle 3 DX series reels in the 4000 size because of their awesome CNC cut gears and super reliable carbon drag systems. These reels are a bargain for the price point.

We have a couple of openings this week so if anyone is looking for a last minute fishing charter please contact us at 321-505-8217 and we can get you scheduled to go out and have a fun day on the water. Let’s go catch your next memory!
