With the recent full moon the crazy fall time bite that we had been seeing has slowed a bit this week. But it’s still been pretty good because the mullet run hasn’t slowed much. The fish are just feeding a lot at night so the daytime bite isn’t wide open anymore. The near-coastal waters outside of the Port are still producing good numbers of snook, bluefish, jack, and redfish. The keys to catching these fish are: try to go fishing when there is a major or minor Solunar feature happening, and use live bait more than artificial lures right now. Doing these two things will double your catch ratio while this full moon is around. Tarpon have slowed but there are still some around if you want to target them. Most of them are running 65 to 90-pounds.

In the lagoons we have seen a change in the fish’s patterns as well. The culvert pipe outflows that had been so productive last week because the reds, trout, snook, and tarpon were stacked up on them are not holding nearly the same amount of fish this week. Most of these pipes are still flowing, but with so much fresh water entering our lagoons since the hurricane these fish have dropped away from those inputs and are looking for saltier water now. The best areas to fish are those loaded up with fingerling mullet near mangrove covered shorelines. The combination of a food source and a salinity level that is more to these predators liking with the mangroves as cover is where you will do best. Free-lined live fingerling mullet or lures like the Rapala Skitterwalk that imitate them are your best options to catch the previously mentioned gamefish species. With the higher than average water levels the snook in particular are pretty easy to catch this week.
