Springtime in Florida is not only a great time for Anglers around the state. Second only to my passion of fishing is my love for the Florida “Spring Gobbler” Turkey season. Central and South Florida are unique in that these are the only areas to hunt the sub species of Wild Turkey known as the Osceola. Hunters not only from around the state but other states and countries as well travel to Florida in the hopes of harvesting an Osceola to complete what is known as the “Slam” of Turkey hunting. The season dates vary by zones across the state but for the most part the seasons run from around mid-March through mid-April.
To me, nothing is more surreal than sitting in the Florida pastures and swamps listening and watching all the sights and sounds of Spring. I was not only blessed this past Saturday to share a hunting blind with my younger brother, but I harvested a great bird to open the season. The individual bag limit is two per person so I’m halfway there. Even if I don’t harvest my second bird for the season the experience is what really matters to me.
