redfish

Fall is right around the corner and so is the yearly redfish spawn. From august through November, redfish and black drum start grouping up to spawn. The primary months are September and October, and these few months can be very exciting and yield some really nice fish. Anglers can find these fish on the outside edges of sandbars, submerged islands, and even on shallow flats with troughs and sloughs early in the morning.

The nice thing about the spawn is most of the time these fish are very cooperative — live bait, dead bait, artificial, fly — there’s a million options and most of the time with a presentation out in front of the school, these fish are not too picky. I strongly suggest fishing single hook rigs, large swim-baits, circle hooks, or gold spoons with a single hook.

It’s very important we take great care of these big breeders so we can help to create memories for the upcoming generations. As fun as it may be, it’s also crucial not to fight these fish on light gear. Beef up your tackle to a 4/5000 series reel at-least, and a rod rated for 15/30lb these setups can help land the fish quick while still enjoying the fight and not doing any damage to the fish. With these brutal summer heats, a long fight is very damaging and can kill very easily. We have a very special place and 95% of our breeders live in our estuary all year round unlike any other estuary.

We have some epic fishing up ahead, get geared up and get after em!
