big jack lagoon

Wow! What a crazy week of fishing we had in the Indian River. The aftermath of hurricane Debbie brought cold water upwelling’s to the near-coastal waters, and this pushed lots of “beach fish” into our lagoons over the past 12 days. Giant jack crevalle, huge bull sharks and tarpon into the 150-pound class were all schooling and feeding together in the yellowfin menhaden pods this week. We caught them on large Rapala top water plugs, Saltwater Assassin jerk baits and Artemis shad, and live baits slow trolled behind the boat. Actually we were primarily targeting the tarpon and jacks so we lost quite a bit of tackle to the bull sharks when they would attack our offerings. We also had a couple of our 20-plus pound jacks get eaten by the bulls as well. Not wanting to reward this unwanted behavior we would move a good ways away from the site of the attack before fishing again. For our customers that did want to experience the intense pull of one of these big sharks we would put out some wire krafts and give them a spin on that ride. It’s exhilarating to watch 100 yards of line get ripped off your reel when any of these three species grabs your lure or bait.
