tripletail

With the persistent west and southwest winds we’ve seen over the past few weeks we now have some cold water upwellings that are starting to show up along the Space Coast in recent days. This is a good and bad thing for anglers looking to get out and catch some fish. The cooler waters are moving the fish around a lot. Tripletail, flounder, and cobia are showing up in better numbers, but tarpon, snook, and redfish are getting tougher to catch in our near-coastal waters. When the cold water moves in it’s much like a wave. If you are on the leading edge of it, there are plenty of fish being “pushed” along that front. If you’re behind the leading edge it “sweeps” everything out of the area and the fishing gets really tough. Hopefully you find yourself in that good water when you get out there this week.

In the lagoons, captain Justin has been jumping tarpon on his recent outings. Live pogies or Saltwater Assassin soft plastic jerk baits seem to be working best for these 25 to 60-pound class fish. They can be found throughout both lagoons, but seem to concentrate around bridges, power line crossings, and dredge holes during this time of the year. Look for areas with baitfish schools showing on the surface and you should find the tarpon.
