It’s been a big change the last week here on the Space Coast weather wise. The bite in the surf continues to get better and better — tarpon, snook, jacks — and the mullet run is in full swing. However, the inshore bite has really picked up, too. With all the added water, shorelines that have been very shallow now have a good bit of water and have been holding good numbers of redfish, snook, trout and juvenile tarpon.
Early morning throwing topwater plugs has been as good as it gets. Look for culverts with good flowing water, finger mullet pods, and areas that have lots of sticks or debris. The rougher looking the area, the better. As the sun rises, most anglers can still find a good bite tossing scented soft plastics like gulp shrimp. It’s been a nice change getting inshore and mixing it up a bit, the redfish bite has been good around the inlets as well.
Unfortunately, I’ve seen lots of anglers that were unaware of the new laws regarding redfish, you cannot harvest redfish in state waters. This means the inlets and beaches are off limits as well, with the exception being beyond 3 miles out. This is a good step forward in creating a more sustainable fishery for years to come.
