fish

We are lucky to live in or visit a state where there is usually always some type of fishing no matter the conditions. This past week has presented us with unstable weather which can sometimes call for multiple changes in tactics. In the least, we sometimes need to have a backup plan. This past week’s cold front left us, once again, with plummeting temps and high winds. This called for a drastic change from the norm which had me switching from the usual inshore flats to the freshwater lakes and marshes.

Although morning temperatures started in the 30’s we were at least able to hide from the wind in some areas. Our targeted species for the day were Black Crappie or Speckled Perch as some may know them as. Not only can they be a blast to catch on light to ultralight tackle but they are also extremely favorable table fare.

After a quick stop at a local tackle shop to pick up some last-minute necessities and a couple dozen minnows, just in case, we were on the water…and freezing! With water temps in the mid to upper 50s we knew we’d have to check deeper water in the hopes of finding them schooled up which can be the best way to obtain size and numbers, especially during this time of year. After trying several different methods, we finally towards the afternoon, dialed in a pattern. Punching hydrilla and hyacinth mats with jigs and minnows in 10-12ft of water. We were able to even invite quite a few larger participants home for dinner as well.

Bottom line — always keep safety in mind but don’t let a little bad weather keep you off the water. There is mostly always a backup plan that can pay off.
